First Book Club for Capitalism Reading Group
Capitalist Realism: Is There No Alternative? by Mark Fisher (81 pages)
Capitalism reading group is a book club that wants to understand the system we all live in. To think about how that system controls our desires, motivations and the world around us. Led by Austin Furnas of Boxing Day Cafe and community member Dena Verhoff in association with Picture Book and HudCo in Dobbs Ferry, New York.
About the Book:
After 1989, capitalism has presented itself as the only realistic political economic system.
What effects has this "capitalist realism" had on work, culture, education and mental health?
Is it possible to imagine an alternative to capitalism that is not some throwback to discredited models of state control?
Message Board:
Doesn't something feel profoundly wrong about the world? ... or is it going exactly as intended?
Why can we not confront the major crises of today? From the climate catastrophe, income inequality, rise of fascism, housing crisis to lack of basic services and so many more.
