From the chef behind Momofuku and star of Netflix's Ugly Delicious--an intimate account of the making of a chef, the story of the modern restaurant world that he helped shape, and how he discovered that success can be much harder to understand than failure.

"David puts words to so many of the things we all feel, sharing generously of his own journey so we can all benefit in the process."--Chrissy Teigen

Self-described "black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet" Audre Lorde is an unforgettable voice in twentieth-century literature, and one of the first to center the experiences of black, queer women. This essential reader showcases her indelible contributions to intersectional feminism, queer theory, and critical race studies in twelve landmark essays and more than sixty poems--selected and introduced by one of our most powerful contemporary voices on race and gender, Roxane Gay.

Set in the American Midwest, England, and India (Mumbai, Ahmedabad, rural Gujarat) the stories in EACH OF US KILLERS are about people trying to realize their dreams and aspirations through their professions. Whether they are chasing money, power, recognition, love, or simply trying to make a decent living, their hunger is as intense as any grand love affair. Straddling the fault lines of class, caste, gender, nationality, globalization, and more, they go against sociocultural norms despite challenges and indignities until singular moments of quiet devastation turn the worlds of these characters--auto-wallah, housemaid, street vendor, journalist, architect, baker, engineer, saree shop employee, professor, yoga instructor, bartender, and more--upside down.

"Jenny Bhatt's gorgeous stories in EACH OF US KILLERS remind me why I love to read a good book. It is such a pleasure to be immersed in the worlds of her characters, in their hunger for love or money, and in their local and global struggles to live. With mouth-watering detail, Bhatt serves up a rich and varied feast."--Devi S. Laskar

A picture book biography by an award-winning team about the first woman to ride a motorcycle around the world.

One day, a girl gets on her motorcycle and rides away. She wants to wander the world. To go . . . Elsewhere. This is the true story of the first woman to ride a motorcycle around the world alone. Each place has something to teach her. Each place is beautiful. And despite many flat tires and falls, she learns to always get back up and keep riding.

Award-winning author Amy Novesky and Governor General's Award-winning illustrator Julie Morstad have teamed up for a spectacular celebration of girl power and resilience.

A hands-on manual and a history and celebration of clothes tending--and its remarkable resurgence as art form, political statement, and path to healing the planet.

For thousands of years, mending was a deep craft that has for too long been a secret history. But now it's back, bigger and better than ever. In this book Kate Sekules introduces the art of visible mending as part of an important movement to give fashion back its soul. Part manifesto, part how-to, MEND! calls for bold new ways of keeping clothes and refreshing your style. Crammed with tips, fun facts, ravishing photography, and illustrated tutorials, MEND! tells you exactly how to rescue and renew your wardrobe with flair and aplomb--and save money along the way.

In Jamie Marina Lau's debut novel, shortlisted for Australia's prestigious Stella Prize when she was nineteen years old, hazily surreal vignettes conjure a multifaceted world of philosophical angst and lackadaisical violence.

A new focus on the sublime landscapes in Lisa Yuskavage's voluptuous figure paintings

Though she is arguably best known for the voluptuous female nudes that populate her paintings, Lisa Yuskavage's work is just as focused on the ethereal settings in which these subjects appear. Yuskavage creates finely detailed landscapes that blur the line between the fantastical and the familiar, melding abstraction with realism to depict self-contained worlds. These outdoor scenes defy conventions of landscape painting with surreal color palettes of lush greens and delicate pinks, cast in a gauzy light quality that highlights the almost magical nature of her paintings.

Published in conjunction with a joint exhibition between the Aspen Art Museum in Colorado and the Baltimore Museum of Art in Maryland, this volume includes color reproductions of Yuskavage's paintings and watercolors from the early 1990s to the present, as well as an interview between Yuskavage and fellow artist Mary Weatherford

"Marie NDiaye is one of my favorite living writers and That Time of Year is yet another shape-shifting masterpiece. Here the disappearance of the protagonist's family is not a mystery to be solved, but rather one that gradually opens a portal into social and psychological terror. NDiaye is a virtuoso of the haunted, the alienated, the submerged, the powerfully strange--and this new novel is as thrilling as it is profound." -Laura van den Berg, author of I Hold a Wolf by the Ears and The Third Hotel

"Marie NDiaye is so intelligent, so composed, so good, that any description of her work feels like an understatement." --The New York Review of Books

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove and "writer of astonishing depth" (The Washington Times) comes a poignant, charming novel about a crime that never took place, a would-be bank robber who disappears into thin air, and eight extremely anxious strangers who find they have more in common than they ever imagined.

Back to School

Here is a back-to-school themed storytime featuring All the Ways to Be Smart by Davina Bell and illustrated by Allison Colpoys. This book celebrates all the different kinds of intelligence we possess. It's a good reminder as we start a school year full of unique challenges to each child, that they are also coming to it with unique gifts. I stumble a bit in this video, but thought I'd keep the mistakes in since I think we all know we're all just trying our best right now.

In the background you can see another great back-to school book called The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson and illustrated by Rafael López which talks about having the courage to connect with others when you feel different from the group you are joining. Links in the comments to learn more about or purchase these great books.

Wishing you all the best of luck with all the new adventures we are undertaking this school year!

ADVANCE PRAISE

“A major achievement. Having and Being Had, rather than leading through narrative, turns individual words and phrases, like capitalismconsumersgreat Americahusbandryart, and work, into fields of inquiry in order to frame a life. With astute consideration, this expansive and intimate accumulation asks the questions that touch all our lives.” —Claudia Rankine

“In this witty, genre-bending book, Eula Biss smashes the taboo against talking about money with exhilarating results. Her investigation ranges from the strictly financial to the broadly philosophical as she accounts for her life with disarming honesty and grace.”  —Jenny Offill

“Eula Biss’s prescient new book gave me new language for things I didn’t know I felt about money, capitalism, and my place inside of an economy that always requires so much of me and gives back so little. A brilliant, lacerating re-examination of our relationship to what we own and why, and who in turn might own us in ways we didn’t know we consented to—what could be more necessary now?” —Alexander Chee

New In Paperback Summer 2020

Looking for a great paperback book to take with you for a nice outdoor read this summer? Check out the books featured below, and our full list of recommended new paperbacks here.

Antiracism Storytime

I'm so happy to share two amazing books for kids in an Antiracism Storytime hosted by HudCo, a beautiful co-working space in Dobbs Ferry.

Antiracist Baby by Ibram X. Kendi and illustrated by Ashley Lukashevsky

Intersectionallies by Latoya Council, Carolyn Choi, & Chelsea Johnson, illustrated by @seilsmith .

These books provide parents useful tools and vocabulary for talking about current events, and raising good citizens. Thoughtful yet playful text and vibrant illustrations will keep it an engaging experience for all ages. I hope that these books inspire us to have brave talks with our kids and to have faith that all the work we are doing now around the country is going to make the world a more just place for all.

As I mention in the video, these books are available through Picture Book’s ecommerce site Bookshop.org, but I also suggest you consider buying them from an independent black-owned bookstore.

Books to Support Antiracism

From the conception of Picture Book, it has been a core value to ensure that I am promoting books by and with representation of people of color. I think it is incredibly important for us all to engage with stories about people of color that don’t have to do with race to remind us all that race isn’t the only story to a person’s life. However, it has become increasingly clear that is not enough at all, and we also need books that deal directly with racism to fight it. As a white woman, I am trying to do the work specifically with Layla F. Saad’s Me and White Supremacy and Ibram X Kendi’s How to Be an Antiracist. You can find my full list of recommendations for printed books on antiracism for all ages here and a full list of audiobooks on antiracism here and several highlighted below. Many books are currently backordered, so if you are feeling the urgency of the moment I strongly recommend you get your audiobooks with the libro.fm platform.

Dangers of Buying Books from Amazon

A new article in the New York Times by David Streitfeld discusses some of the problems with Amazon’s book business. Many sellers are offering counterfeit books through the platform with little to no oversight from Amazon, including counterfeit copies of important medical textbooks that are poorly printed and could cause grave confusion on top of robbing the author of royalties.

“A book takes a year or more to write,” said Andrew Hunt of the Pragmatic Bookshelf, a North Carolina publisher of computer books that had at least one of its titles stolen. “But to steal the book and upload it to Amazon takes only a minute. As the expression goes, there’s a low cost of entry.”

And when someone buys a counterfeit, Mr. Hunt added, the real author may get cheated but Amazon still makes a sale. “You could ask, What’s their incentive to do something?” he said.

Yet another reason to buy your books locally from an independent bookstore that cares about quality, authenticity, and supports authors.
