Read 25 in 25

Join us to Read 25 together!

Each year on the Happier with Gretchen Rubin podcast, Gretchen issues a challenge to herself and listeners. This yearly challenge started in 2020, with “Walk 20 in ‘20”: Walk for 20 minutes each day in 2020. Since then, thousands of people have joined the annual challenge as a practical, manageable way to boost happiness and build positive habits.

For 2025, Gretchen is bringing back a fan-favorite challenge with reading: Read 25 in ’25 to help build the valuable habit of making time to read every day.  Research shows that reading is good for us: it benefits mental health, sharpens the brain, makes us more empathetic, helps us learn, and increases our tolerance for uncertainty. And most importantly, it’s fun!

To celebrate we’ll get together in the café section around Picture Book inside HudCo and take 25 minutes to read silently together. Come early to get a beverage from Boxing Day Café or to pick out your next read from Picture Book.

Meet & Greet: Katie Tolson, featured in The Flower Farmers

Meet Katie Tolson of Seed on Hudson, featured in the new book The Flower Farmers

Join us to celebrate the release of the new book The Flower Farmers; Inspiration & Advice from Expert Growers by Debra Prinzing & Robin Avni, which features our local flower farmer Katie Tolson along with 28 more of today's most inspiring flower farmers offering how-to-cultivate expertise, and favorite new varieties in a lushly photographed guide to feed your every floral fantasy. Come to Picture Book inside HudCo, pick up a copy of this essential book for flower garden enthusiasts, and get a chance to talk to Katie Tolson and benefit from her specialty knowledge in seasonal practices for our specific region.

About Katie:
Seed-on-Hudson is the brainchild of flower farmer and seed saver Katie Tolson based in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.

Her love of plants and flowers started with freshly picked summer strawberries and roses in her mother's & grandmother's gardens. California raised her, the UK made her a mother, and New York gave her the space to grow dreams.

Inspired by her love of all things organic, flavorful, fragrant and homegrown, and frustrated by the lack of places to buy good quality, healthy seedlings of heirloom varieties and native plants, Katie set up Seed-on-Hudson to serve her local Westchester community. Katie is a Committee Member of the Hastings Pollinator Pathway Project and initiated The Great Hastings Seed Swap in February 2021.

Rivertowns for Reproductive Rights Book Club

Rivertowns for Reproductive Rights Book Club at Picture Book

Join us for the inaugural Rivertowns for Reproductive Rights Book Club at Picture Book to discuss Abortion: Our Bodies, Their Lies, and the Truths We Use to Win, the important new book by Jessica Valenti.

Abortion is a handbook for the overwhelming majority of Americans who support abortion rights, whether they’re seasoned activists or those just starting to learn. With the wit, expertise, and blunt moral clarity that’s made her writing popular for decades, Valenti offers an essential manifesto in an urgent moment.

We'll meet on the HudCo couches for a community discussion, fueled by cheese and beverages from Bloomy Cheese & Provisions. Your ticket helps cover food costs and the rest will be donated to NYAAF.

Picture Book is donating 10% of all Abortion book sales to NYAAF, and you can choose to add the book onto the ticket, or buy directly on Picture Book's website to avoid additional fees. It is also available as an audiobook on Libro.fm, or as an EBook from Bookshop.

Author Event: Veera Hiranandani Signs Many Things at Once

Book Signing with local, award-winning author Veera Hiranandani

***RESCHEDULED TO FRIDAY 2/7 1PM***

Date & Time: Thursday Februaru 6th, 1pm
Location: Picture Book, HudCo, Dobbs Ferry, NY

Join us for a special book signing event with local, Newbery Honor award-winning author Veera Hiranandani as she celebrates the release of her new picture book, Many Things at Once.

Picture Book will also have other books by Veera Hiranandani for children of all ages, available to purchase.

About the Book:
In this poignant picture book about family and belonging, the child of a Jewish mother and a South Asian father hears stories about her family history. Sometimes she doesn't feel Jewish enough or South Asian enough, but comes to realize you can feel--and be--many things at once.

Based on the author's own family history, here is a moving story about a young girl from two different backgrounds. The girl's mother tells her stories about her mother, a Jewish seamstress in Brooklyn, New York. She lived in a tiny two-bedroom apartment and sewed wedding dresses shimmering in satin and lace.

Her father tells stories of his mother, the girl's other grandmother, who liked to cook bubbling dal on a coal stove in Pakistan. They tell stories about how both sides came to America, and how, eventually, her parents met on a warm summer evening in Poughkeepsie.

The girl sometimes feels as if she's the "only one like me." One day, when she spots a butterfly in her yard, she realizes it's okay to be different--no two butterflies are alike, after all. It's okay to feel alone sometimes, but also happy and proud. It's okay to feel-- and be-- many things at once.

About Veera Hiranandani:
Veera Hiranandani, author of the Newbery Honor-winning The Night Diary, earned her MFA in creative writing at Sarah Lawrence College. She is the author of The Whole Story of Half a Girl, a Sydney Taylor Notable Book and a South Asia Book Award finalist, and How to Find What You're Not Looking For, winner of the Sydney Taylor Book Award and the New York Historical Society Children's History Book Prize. A former editor at Simon & Schuster, she now teaches in the Writing for Children and Young Adults MFA Program at The Vermont College of Fine Arts.
